Where to find your VIN

A quick guide to locating your VIN when you need it

Man looking for the VIN on his car.
There are lots of places to find your VIN, including several in your car.

Your VIN is your car’s 17-digit serial number. If you need it for a listing, loan, or insurance, here are the quickest places to look, starting with the easiest.

1. Insurance documents

Insurance card:
Your VIN is almost always printed on your physical card.

Mobile app:
Most insurers display your VIN in their app, where you can usually copy it.

Insurance website:
Log into your insurer’s online portal and check your policy details or digital insurance card.

2. Registration, title, and bill of sale

Registration:
Your annual registration form includes the VIN. It’s usually in your glove box.

Title:
If you own your car outright, the VIN is printed on the title (keep this document in a safe place, not in the vehicle).

Bill of sale:
Dealer paperwork or private party sale paperwork will include the VIN as well.

3. Manufacturer or lender account

Some automakers (such as BMW, Ford, Tesla, and others) let you view your vehicles online under a “My Garage” section.

If you financed your car, your lender’s online dashboard may list the VIN too.

4. On your car (most reliable)

These are guaranteed to have the VIN.

  1. Driver’s door jamb sticker
Take a photo and use your phone to copy the text directly.
  2. Base of the windshield
Visible from outside the car on the driver’s side.

5. Less common places on the car

Useful if you’re having trouble locating it elsewhere or if you need to crosscheck.

  • Under the hood, stamped on the engine block
  • In the trunk, under the spare tire
  • Inside the rear driver-side wheel well

6. Search your email

Try searching for “VIN”, your car’s make and model, or past service records. Insurance quotes and repair receipts often include the VIN.
